~ * ~
Jae checked his phone. He’d called Kelly several times in the past few days. So far he hadn’t gotten a response to any of those, but just now, while he’d showered, Kelly had actually left him a message requesting that he call back. He picked up his landline and dialed, knowing that he’d probably be interrupting dinner. He didn’t want to wait.
“Hello?” Kelly’s voice came on the line. He sounded a bit hesitant.
“Hello, Kelly?” Jae paused. “It’s Jae.”
“Hi.” Silence.
The vast ocean of quiet sucked at Jae’s brain like a vacuum. “How are you? I’ve been thinking about you. Trying to call…”
“Oh? I know, I guess. I’ve been accused of avoiding my phone… I wondered if you weren’t calling to tell me how busy you’ve been. You know…” Kelly hesitated.
“Why would I call you to…? Did you think I was blowing you off?”
“Well. No, not really. Yes,” said Kelly.
“I see. What an idiot. No wonder you need a houseboy.” Kelly remained silent, and Jae had to wade in with no clues. “Look. I can’t get you out of my mind. Or my heart. Or my balls, if it comes to that. I want you in the best and worst and most unpredictable, but mostly the most chaotic way.”
“I’m close,” said Kelly.
Jae held the phone out and stared at it. “Are we having phone sex? If you’re that close I should be allowed to catch up, and I—”
“No.” Kelly laughed. “I’m close. I’m staying at a beach condo in Santa Monica. So I’m geographically close. Closer. To you. That’s all I meant. Yeesh. Phone sex.”
“Did you just say, ‘Yeesh’?”
“I did, didn’t I? Do you want to take a walk on the beach sometime? Do you have time for that?”
“Give me your address. I’ll make time.”
“Okay.” Kelly gave him the street name and the name of the apartment building. “I’m on the second floor. Unit C. We have a nice view and—”
“We?” Jae stopped him.
“Yes.” Jae could tell Kelly was waiting for him to say something.
“What does that mean, we?”
“It means that Will and I are staying in this apartment, in Santa Monica, together.” Jae heard something that sounded like a squawk, and then a lot of muffled rumbling noises, and then, inexplicably, he found himself talking to Will.
“Oh, for heaven’s sake,” Will barked, and Jae could tell he was trying to dampen the sound on something, maybe his chest. “Left to your own devices you would… Hello? Jae?”
“Uh,” said Jae. “Yes. Hi, Will.” Jae rolled his eyes, then felt bad even though neither man he was talking to could see him do it.
“Look. I’m going to just throw this out there, okay? Kelly and I were fuck buddies and that lasted until the first time he saw your huge Korean ass and then it was all like Jae this and Jae that. I’m sure if you asked him politely he’d tell you he’s been having some really, really good dreams lately, moaning your name and whatnot, and for his sake I think you should show him that the reality could be a hell of a lot better than the dreams.
